Behind this elegant but unassuming façade is a Lego-like house built on a long and narrow plot, cleverly deconstructed to create intimate spaces, whether you are two or 10, and each element positioned in such a way that nothing obstructs nature’s drawcard: an infinite horizon of blue. In the sheltered back garden Garapa decking meets emerald squares of grass; this spacious outdoor corridor is bookended by two buildings, each comprising different materials but reflecting a relationship in scale and pitch. The corrugated-iron Boathouse, with large glass sliding doors that provide visual access to the sea, is the ideal teenage pad, with a TV and deep sofas that can double up as beds, and a loft room with additional beds. Opposite lies the guest accommodation wing: two airy bedrooms (both twin, both en-suite, with generous walk-in showers) sharing a sleek central kitchenette, so early risers here don’t disturb possible light sleepers in the main house. Both bedrooms have large stable doors that open onto the back garden with its firepit and enticing pool area, and views of the blue beyond – a thoughtful, considerate layering that typifies the design ethos here.
The main house is surprisingly cozy: upstairs are two marvelous bedrooms, cocooned with choir carpets. Both offer the same glorious sea views from the bed, en-suite (one with tub and outdoor shower; the second with shower only) and enjoy equal access to the communal balcony, making this a great house to share. Downstairs is the open-plan living-dining-kitchen area, where Moroccan tiles give way to broad oak floorboards, and slide-and-fold doors offer seamless integration with the outside lounge-dining room. This outdoor stoep, a textured space with signature post-box-red dining table, large fireplace (there is also a convection wood-burning oven fireplace indoors), comfortable wicker chairs with pretty shweshwe pillows, is really the heart of the house, with views of the ocean that provides your lullaby by day and night. Décor is unassuming; a soothing combination of good taste and quality finishes. Curated vintage pieces, picked from the original beach house, built by the owner’s parents, add to the intangible soul we look for in our most iconic villas.
Grotto beach is perfect for both swimming and leisurely walks; the best swimming spots are a 4- to 5-minute’s stroll from your deck. Dutchies restaurant, a local institution, is only 7 minutes away on foot. If you really need to use your car, the Hermanus centre is 10 minutes away; Cape Town city is around 90 to 120 minutes from here. Hemel en Aarde Valley, arguably the most superb pinot noir and chardonnay terroir in South Africa, is 45 minutes from your front door.
