Beautifully positioned on the eastern edge of False Bay, Strand is an idyllic beachside haven, with a touch of glamour, in the Helderberg region of South Africa’s Western Cape. With 5 kilometres of white sandy beach, most of the activities in the town are directed towards the coastline.
Indulge in that beachfront holiday that childhood memories are made of, with sand, rock pools, buckets, and spades; sun screen in thick layers, umbrellas, and long days in glorious sunshine. But while the beach is a major attraction in Strand, visitors have plenty to keep them occupied elsewhere too.
- Get in a round of 18 holes at the Strand Golf Club's Championship course in a breath-taking setting
- The Market Shed has a farmer's market every Saturday morning with plenty of fresh and delicious produce available
- Visit the Cheetah Outreach or the 10 hectare bird sanctuary for some incredible wildlife encounters with a focus on conservation
Strand is no longer the sleepy retirement town of the past. The beachfront now has a collection of exceptional apartment blocks that lend the area excitement and glamour. So should sand not be your "thing", or the weather choose not to make it very appealing, there are a variety of excellent restaurants from where the endless ocean views can be enjoyed.
Venturing further afield, the Helderberg Wine Route is mainly spread around nearby Somerset West. Many wine farms offer rolling lawns for picnics, incredible views, and a variety of activities for children.
Spot the southern right whales, humpback whales, and, on a rare occasion, the Bryde's whales between June and December in the bay. The best chance of seeing their magnificent displays are in September and October. Take a boat ride to get a closer view and some input from the experts.
Strand is also a great place to get more ocean active than reclining on the stretch of sand. Diving courses are offered for all age and ability levels if you're keen to venture below the waves. Or grab a board and ride them instead with some surfing lessons from the experts.View other areas >
