High up on the front slopes of Table Mountain at the top of Cape Town’s City Bowl is a suburb buzzing with eccentric activity, yet peaceful and serene. It is a contrasting mix of trendy with gracious as you move higher up its impressive location.

The surrounding neighbourhood enjoys the cover of countless trees that provide shade, fresh air and a connection to nature that makes this leafy suburb both beautiful and unique. The beaches of the Atlantic Seaboard are just on the other side of the mountain and the upper reaches of eclectic Kloof Street are within walking distance.

  • Spend time at De Waal Park, either for a meander through the beautiful space or for a long lazy picnic in idyllic surroundings
  • Classy cocktails at The Stack or high tea at the Mount Nelson Hotel are just a short distance from Oranjezicht
  • Gardens Shopping Centre is close by and has a wide array of boutiques and grocery stores plus an excellent deli

Wander downhill through the tree-lined avenues for views that stretch on forever and to reach buzzing Orange Street where the famed Mount Nelson Hotel is located. Wander uphill for idyllic walks in the foothills of Table Mountain and to soak in those views in utter peace.

The suburb was developed on the site of the original Oranjezicht Farm, so named because it had a view ("zicht") of the Oranje (or orange) bastion of the Castle of Good Hope. From 1708 the property operated as a farm for two centuries and some of the old buildings, including the slave bell, are still there.

The Oranjezicht City Farm now operates in the area as a non-profit, neighbourhood-run farm project. Local residents get involved with growing organic produce here and volunteers conduct guided tours through the beautifully laid-out gardens.

The Molteno Dam, built in 1877, and De Waal Park, opened officially in 1895, lie close together and are both beautiful public spaces. Popular for dog walking, jogging, or, in the case of the park, simply lying on the lawn in the shade of the huge trees. De Waal Park also hosts very popular Sunday concerts during the summer months.
