Looking to kick your feet up and enjoy some R&R while in Cape Town? Here are our top five Spa’s that we reckon are a must try…
1. Heavenly Spa at the Westin Cape Town
They weren’t lying when they called this tranquil piece of paradise Heavenly Spa… For starters, it’s located on the 19th floor of the Westin Cape Town hotel, and provides the most beautiful panoramic views of the harbour, V&A Waterfront and Table Mountain. Then there’s the various pampering offerings, such as the spa’s sauna, steam room, heated pool and heated jet pool which guests can use before and/or after their treatment (in fact, you’re welcome to unwind here as long as you want). They offer all types of treatments and packaged experiences. For those that want to combine a few treatments; massages, facials and body treatments, to make a day of it, we recommend the Heavenly Spa Signature treatment: it’s a 60-minute massage using hot stone and Swedish massage techniques, which will leave you more relaxed than a Sea Otter frolicking in the ocean. Another bonus is that you can soak in the impressive views from any of the spa’s various facilities’s vantage points.
Heavenly Spa is open seven days a week from 09h00 to 20h00 and is located in the Westin Hotel, Convention Square, Lower Long Street. To make a reservation, please call +2721-412-8200 or make an online reservation by clicking here. You can also view their Spa Menu by clicking here.
2. Garden Spa at Babylonstoren
This spa is ideal for those who love greenery, nature and the tranquillity it brings. Set on the renowned, luscious Babylonstoren farm, the Garden Spa is centred within a bamboo garden that features a quaint and quiet plunge pool that used to be the old farmhouse’s reservoir – it’s here where guests are invited to unwind before a treatment. After treatments, guests can relax in the spa’s blissful Chill Room where tea, water and harmony are served. Guests are also welcome to spend their time lounging in the steam room, sauna and heated jet pool. The Garden Spa’s Private Hamman Water Ritual is a must-try! This 60-minute treatment includes full-body exfoliation, body butter application and a head and scalp treatment, and is worth every minute of indulgence. Alternatively, try one of their many facial experiences – the spa uses only locally-made, organic beauty products. Naturally, you need to end your day with a fresh juice and salad, made from herbs and vegetables sourced from the Babylonstoren garden – please note that this needs to pre-ordered, which can be done when you make your appointment.
The Garden Spa is open seven days a week from 08h00 to 17h00 and is located on Babylonstoren Farm on the Klapmuts/Simondium Road towards the R45. To make a reservation, please call +2721-863-3852 or email email@example.com. You can also view their Spa Menu by clicking here.
3. Mai Thai Wellness Spa
It’s not without reason that locals say that this spa is like having a holiday without ever leaving the city. Found in the cobbled streets of De Waterkant in Green Point, Mai Thai is where the East meets West meets Africa meets serenity. Their treatments are inspired by ancient wellness rituals and recipes from Thailand and Asia, and are applied in the best Eastern and Western techniques combined. Their Asian Blend Signature Hot Herbal massage makes use of fresh and dried herbs, wrapped into a muslin cloth, which is then steamed before being used to massage the body – it’s said to induce deep relaxation, relieve stress and improve sleep (perfect for jet-lag!). The spa also offers other pamper treatments like facials and nail treatments, and stocks award winning body care and home spa ranges by the award-winning HARNN brand.
Guests are also treated to exquisite, calming organic speciality teas from Thailand before and after treatments, and are invited to relax in the spa’s tranquil bamboo courtyard while sipping on these brews. All in all, it’s like spending a day in Thailand, without having to travel hours upon hours to get there. Winning!
Mai Thai Wellness Spa is open Monday to Friday from 08h00 to 19h00 and Saturdays from 08h00 to 16h00 (closed on Sundays), and is located at 18 Dixon Street, De Waterkant. To make a reservation, please call +2721-418-0713 or 071-611-1886.
4. Librisa Spa at Mount Nelson
The Nelly, as The Mount Nelson is affectionately named by locals, might be renowned for their decadent high-teas and celebrity guests… But it is their Librisa Spa that’s actually has visitors from near and far return time and time again. Set in a revamped Victorian home in the hotel’s majestic gardens, Librisa offers a luxurious, tranquil escape from Cape Town’s bustling streets without having to drive further than five minutes from anywhere within the City Centre. The spa has eight spacious treatment rooms as well as an opulent splash pool, steam room and sauna for pre- or post-treatment unwinding. We also love that the spa mainly uses Kalahari and Africology products; not only are these products proudly African but they are also made from natural, organic ingredients. We recommend spoiling yourself with one of their spa packages – the Afternoon Bliss for Two is a favourite with couples as it includes a 60 minute massage and Afternoon Tea (with delicious treats) in the hotel lounge.
Librisa Spa is open seven days a week from 09h00 to 19h00 and is located at the Mount Nelson Hotel 76 Orange St, Gardens, Cape Town. To make a reservation, please call +2721-483-1550 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also view their Spa Menu by clicking here.
If you’re after something different, that will still ensure you leave relaxed to the max, then Enmasse is a must try. It’s here that you’ll experience massages as its been practiced for centuries in the East. In Thailand, a massage is a simple exercise practiced regularly; not considered a luxury as we have come to know it in the West. Thai massages are based on the age-old philosophy that one should open the flow of the energy in the body and restore balance in the mind, which so too is the core of Enmasse’s philosophy. And to remain authentic to Thai customs, Enmasse’s massages are oil-free and conducted fully clothed – guests swap their attire for a cotton shirt and Thai pants (both which are subtly infused with Cedarwood, French Tarragon, Carrot Seed and Jasmine to enhance the relaxing properties of the massage). In Enmasse’s desire to remain true to the Thai-style of massage, their massages takes place in a luxuriously, serene large open-plan room, which is partitioned into smaller massage areas; the massage takes place on a soft mattress instead of a bed so that your body can be stretched and gently kneaded for ultimate relaxation and de-stressing.(They are so comfortable you may consider swopping your own bed out for one) After the massage, while you are still feeling giddy from relaxation, guests are taken to the Tea Room where they can choose from 47 different blends of tea to further unwind. The best part is that Enmasse, like in Thailand, encourages their guests to simply walk in for a treatment and there’s no need to book in advance.
Enmasse is open seven days a week from 08h00 to 22h00 and is located at Gate 2, Schoonder Street, Gardens, Cape Town. As mentioned, walk-ins are welcome but if you want to make a reservation, please call +2721-461-5650 or email email@example.com. You can also view their massage menu by clicking here.
So, with five very different R&R spaces, the only question is in which order should you try them all in? *wink-wink*
Happy rest and relaxation!
