Why South Africans are rejoicing

Why South Africans are rejoicing – and choosing to holiday at homeDear colleagues
On recent travels I have been inundated with questions regarding our new president – who is he; what does he stand for; and why is his name so difficult to pronounce?
To be honest, I was delighted by the news that Kgalema Motlanthe had been appointed president of South Africa. While not well known beyond our borders, the dignified Motlanthe represents a return to the values espoused by our revered statesman Nelson Mandela.
Never one to hog the limelight, Motlanthe is deeply respected for his negotiating abilities and that rarest of political talents: to empathetically listen to all viewpoints before acting decisively, based on the greater good for the majority. Which is precisely why our much maligned health minister was the first to be absolved of any further responsibilities on his watch – a huge relief and source of much celebration amongst AIDS activists. As South Africans, we all look forward to the even hand with which Motlanthe will continue to govern …. as for the pronunciation issues - if only politicians were sensible enough to consider stage names!
In the mean time, we are all in the grips of the global credit crisis, and heaven knows when it will end (soon, we say!), but every cloud - as the truism goes - has a silver lining, and here is one: there has not been a better time to travel to South Africa.
South Africa remains the most exciting destination on the continent, combining unbelievable natural beauty with highly developed infrastructure and world-class cuisine and accommodation – the latter now available at up to 40% less, due to current currency fluctuations. Unlike tourism in developing economies like East Africa and India, South African tourism products are mostly priced in the local currency, allowing you to make the most of the massive savings inherent in the latest fluctuating rand values. But be warned – with South Africans choosing to holiday at home this summer for the very same reasons, it’s worth booking your chosen Icon villa or apartment now. Come and experience what we have to offer, at rates unlikely to be repeated again.
We look forward to hearing from you,
Therese Botha
