The Ultimate Guys Getaway

December 2007

The Quintessential boys weekend calls for
braais, booze, flat-screen TVs and, of course, golf, all set
in a luxurious location. While one can probably get all this
served up at plenty places in SA, there is a specific spot in
the heart of the wine region that comes out tops.
Compleat Golfer has in the past often suggested that
every golfer should experience a weekend at De Zalze at
least once in his lifetime. Apart from being one of the
top golf courses in the country, having recently received a
Five-star Golf Experience Award from Compleat Golfer, De
Zalze offers one of the best Winelands experiences in South
Africa thanks to its association with the award-winning
Kleine Zalze winery and the top-rated Terroir restaurant.

Now, a group called The Allure Collection, which offer
several luxurious designer homes, penthouses and game
lodges across the country, have brought world-class
comfort to De Zalze. We had the pleasure of experiencing
the lavish Phumzela villa, that sleeps eight very comfort-
ably in four beautifully appointed, en-suite rooms, and
has just about every state-of-the-art mod con you could
possibly hope for, and then some.

Our advice: stay over at Phumzela on a Friday night and
book an early tee-off time for Saturday morning leaving you
time to enjoy a lemonade on the clubhouse patio before
heading just up the road to Kleine Zalze winery to taste
their legendary Chenin Blanc. Then, enjoy a long, lazy lunch
out in gardens at Terroir, just a few steps from the tasting
room, (make sure you book a table! Tel: 021 80 8167)
before making your way back to the villa where you light up
the braai, admire the beautiful sunset from the balcony and
watch the evening’s sport in your personal home theatre. If
you have any space left for some more of the area’s finest
wines, the cellar and wine tasting room can be put to good
use, otherwise take a dip in the rim-flow pool overlooking
the 8th green.

A night at Phumzela will set you back R5 070 (R634 per
person, in season) to R2 140 (R268 per person, in whale
season: June, July, August) – very affordable, when you con-
sider the sheer swankiness of the lodge. By using a stringent
selection process Allure Collection ensures similar opulent
standards at other locations around the country, including
Pezula, Boschenmeer and elsewhere in South Africa. For
more information on Phumzela or any other Allure Villa go
