Hotel in the heart of the City of Gold
*African-chicIcon Décor is proud to be part of the rejuvenation of Jozi’s inner city, setting the style for Mapungubwe, the first luxury hotel to open in the heart of Marshalltown. Built in the 1950s to house a French bank, the sandstone building has a proud heritage, and the décor reflects this blend of modern lifestyle and stately history.
There are a total of 91 rooms across seven floors, with arrangements varying from studio to one-bedroom apartments, as well as numerous lobbies and reception rooms, a foyer and a penthouse.
Unique features, like the original safe deposit boxes and solid steel vault, were retained to add character detail to the lounge areas.
In keeping with the proudly African theme, the floors alternate in hues of deep blues and burnt reds, while the rooms themselves have a distinctly African flavour, with interesting modern pieces created by our most talented designers. The distinctive Tub chairs in the bedrooms, for example, as well as the Zulu Mama chairs and Fiela Feather floor lighting in the foyer, are by renowned decorator Haldain Martin.
If Mapungubwe Hotel is a pioneer in the rejuvenation of Jozi’s inner city, its piece de resistance is the ultra-stylish penthouse suite.
The décor here is contemporary, with ethnic influences. The colour combinations are designed to enhance the light and space, lending warmth to counteract the cool of chrome functional art pieces.
Clean-lined African teak lends warmth with its rich mahogany finish, while soft furnishings are upholstered with the finest quality textured fabrics.
Classic embossed voile curtains in the double volume stairwell emphasise and soften the ceiling-height windows and glass doors.
