Hermanus is on the southern coast of the Western Cape along the Cape Whale Coast Route. It is an easy 90 minute drive from Cape Town and a great stop prior to heading down the Garden Route.
The area is well known for it’s whale season when the Southern Right whales visit Hermanus. The whales are spotted as early as June and usually head off around early December. This attracts many visitors to the area, especially for the annual whale festival at the end of September.
- The world's only Whale Crier sounds his kelp horn to announce the sighting of whales in Hermanus
- Designated pathways along the cliffs from New Harbour all the way to Grotto Beach have uninterrupted ocean views and are popular for walking or running
- Play a game of boule at La Vierge and indulge in a food pairing sensation at Creation when exploring the Hemel-en-Aarde wine route
There are a number of excellent beaches to choose from with Grotto Beach in Voelklip being the largest. This beach has Blue Flag status and is very popular for those perfect beach days of sand castles, buckets and spades, tanning, and swimming. Voelklip Beach and Langbaai are great surfing spots with ideal waves for body boarding too.
Hermanus has a wonderful wine route worthy of a day trip or two. The Hemel-en-Aarde (meaning heaven and earth) valley meanders through some glorious countryside with spectacular views. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc vines thrive in the clay soil cooled by ocean breezes. Sip your way through Whalehaven, Hamilton Russell, Bouchard Finlayson, Newton Johnson, ending with Creation in its elevated position.
Hermanus offers hiking trails, excellent bird watching opportunities, outdoor adventure activities including golf, fishing, horse riding, great white shark diving (from nearby Gansbaai), paragliding, sailing, scuba diving, great beaches and boat based whale watching.View other areas >
