Tamboerskloof

Lying on the slopes of Lion’s Head and Signal Hill, Tamboerskloof forms part of the richly diverse City Bowl of Cape Town. It is adjacent to the suburbs of Gardens and the Bo-Kaap, and from here there is easy access to Table Mountain and Camps Bay.

The vibrant suburb has a backdrop of Table Mountain and the city bowl laid out before it. Views can extend right across to the Helderberg Mountains.

  • Hiking up Lion's Head is relatively easy, even for those who do not often hike, and is a must for majestic views of Cape Town
  • Trendy and eclectic, Tamboerskloof is a popular suburb with easy access to the entire peninsula
  • Kloof Street, with its wide array of shops and restaurants, is a quick walk from Tamboerskloof

The suburb's name dates back to the arrival of the Dutch settlers in 1652 and means valley of the drums. The settlers established lookout posts with spotters and the first of these was stationed where the suburb of Tamboerskloof stands today. The spotter would drum the message to signal the arrival of a ship so that farmers could bring their crops to the harbour.

Architectural styles are an eclectic mix with art deco and Victorian standing next to each other. While perfectly placed to explore the energetic city, the streets of Tamboerskloof are peaceful and tree-lined. It's the ideal base with so many restaurants and shops within walking distance and excellent public transport options.
