Along the shores of Table Bay, about 25 km to the north of Cape Town city centre, lies the laid-back suburb of Bloubergstrand. The name Bloubergstrand in Afrikaans literally means “blue mountain beach” derived from Blaauwberg, a nearby mountain.
Blouberg beach is one of the best kitesurfing spots in the Western Cape with that notorious Cape Town wind being welcomed rather than cursed. As soon as it starts blowing kites can be seen flying high above the ocean as you drive along the coast, creating a vibrant and vivid picture.
- Eden on the Bay is popular for picnics, watching watersports, and enjoying sundowners and meals at one of the many restaurants
- Take the children to Small Bay beach for some fun in the sand and to dip their toes in the icy cold water
- Kitesurfers from all over the world flock to Big Bay at the end of January every year for the Red Bull King of the Air competition
Bloubergstrand encompasses the suburbs of Tableview, Parklands, and West Beach. It is popular with young families and is an ever-expanding area stretching further northwards as development continues. The largest regional shopping mall in Cape Town is located just off the West Coast Road in Sunningdale and has been built with innovative green-building technologies.
Outdoor activities are very popular in this area with the beach playing a major role. Whether walking or running along the Blouberg beachfront, surfing at Big Bay, or relaxing in the sunshine at a restaurant overlooking the ocean, the long stretch of sand tends to have a magnetic pull.
Rietvlei Wetland Reserve is home to abundant birdlife and very popular amongst birdwatchers. The bird hide comfortably seats 20 people for front row seats of the birds wading in the lagoon and through the reeds.
Bloubergstrand is filled with excellent restaurants and caters for all cuisine preferences. Many are found along the coastal stretch for enjoying incredible views from breakfast to dinnertime.View other areas >
